Introducing Machinist Mate 2nd Class E. L. LeRoy Part 2

Last week we went over the certified copy of the death certificate. This week I'll cover the process of handling the first of a number of service related documents.

The next document I tackled was the damaged discharge papers found with the papers my dad received when my Grandma May died. Since I know this is a document that pertains to my grandfather from the provenance of the document, I created a Todo item for the entry and evaluation of this document.

I transcribed the discharge certificate into my Geneology Diary for Edward. I then add the image next to the transcription in my Diary and evaluate the data.

This information is given upon the statement xxat the original discharge has been lost or destroyed. This certificate was authorized by the Act of Conxxess dated 7 February 1890 (26 Stat. 6, chap. 8; U.S. Code, sec.598, title 34). By direction of Chief of Naval Personel: Signed B.G. JONES, LT, USN

I created a Todo item to see if any new documentation exists for my grandfather at the National Archives. This document was created years after his discharge as the original documents have been damaged. I need to try and request current files as there may have been some new documents recovered since the file was created.

After analyzing the document I Set up the source clipboard and record and Cite the Service number, name, dates of service and rank. Place and date of birth are also provided as is a physical description and character of discharge.

We can confirm this by clicking the source button and verifying the Source is listed with each fact.

I entered the information from the discharge certificate by creating events for Edward's Service number
Service number entry

 Dates of enlistment and discharge.
Enlistment Entry

Discharge Entry includes Character of Discharge

I also created events for the Occupation and physical description. I then added the source citation for Name, Date of Birth and Place of Birth.
